I have not performed any metrics nor have I read any official reports. The only thing I've seen is anecdotal. When connected to wifi and doing data heavy tasks (web surfing, etc.), I've read that it is less battery intensive to use the wifi as opposed to going straight 3G. If you're not in a wifi connected zone, then you might get marginally better batt life by turning wifi off completely.

I see. So if the device is constantly seeking a wi-fi signal and not in a stable set up it can use more battery. Thanks very much! :)

That's what I've read. I don't know if it's noticeably better to turn it off of not when not connected to a wifi network, though. Again, just anecdotal evidence.
