Proximity Detector

I have just got an iphone for myself, it is mainly a work phone.
I sometimes have to answer a call when I am sweaty and extra hot form working hard and wearing earmuffs.
The problem is that when I do answer the iphone "all sweaty" i go to hang up the phone but the screen doesn't realize I am not holding it to my ear anymore. So there is no option to hang up the phone. Does the proximity detector work on temperature? Or does it "see" my sweat on the screen?
Just a note the iphone is in a Otterbox case.
Does this make any sense. Should i be worried? Return it DOA? Or is it just the nature of the beast?

Thanx for your help

This sometimes happens when I am working, out, I have to wipe my phone on my shirt, or towel, and the screen pops back up, and I can end the call. I think it's the sweat covering the sensor.

Yeah I have had this issue once or twice even when I am not working out. I think it is just something that happens from time to time, not much to worry about.
