CraigsList or Ebay is pretty much your only option. Apple nor AT&T sell it anymore. Apple only keeps stock of them for people that need to swap out or have warranty issues.
What heavy price point are you referring to? 2Gs on craigslist around here are no more than 250 or less for a 16GB.

Maybe he doesn't want to put a lot of money out or sign a contract, or maybe he likes the design of the 2G better.
I personally thought the 2G felt a lot more solid than the current design. I have a white 3gs but i've thought about picking up a cheap 2g as a backup phone. I loved the design of those little buggers.

I completly agree with iMuggle! I currently have the iPhone 3GS, and quite frankly, it's a dissapointment cosmetic wise. I really dislike the feel of the plastic, and it just feels flimsey all around. The iPhone 2G had a very peculiar "black box" feel. I was looking to use it as a second back up phone. I had left the 3G at the airport

I own my 16GB 2G for about two years.
I got it from an Apple store right before the Apple, Inc. stoped to sell them.
Yes, the solid light grey metal back side include a black strip below of it, makes 2G having a beautiful flat back design.
The 3G and 3GS users all talk about GPS capability on their device which I as a motorcycle off-road rider always I prefer to don't use GPS on cellphones.
Garmin and Tom Tom GPS devices are great.
The Lord bless
