I can't turn off my phone, the screen doesn't respond.

Hold the power and home button together until you see the screen go dark. This is how you reboot the phone. I know you're pannicked but it's a pretty common question so next time search first.

yeah sometimes the search can be a little tricky, I used power since power off or power on would be your choice but off and on are below the 4 letter minimum for seach requirements. I found this http://forum.theiphoneblog.com/iphone-help/180218-my-iphone-3g-wont-turn.html they are out there
