Assigning new tones to Mail, Voicemail, Etc.

I've had my 3GS for a week now and would like to know if there is a way to assign different ringtones for mail, voicemail notices?

You will have to jailbreak it.

If you're running 3.1 don't worry about jailbreaking anyway because a jailbreak
isn't out yet.

Basically it extends the capabilities of what the phone already is able to do.
Things that are restricted by Apple.

For example, running non-native apps in the backround. The iPod or something
like Safari run in the backround. But let's say you're playing a game and get
a text message. You have to completely close down the game to view the
text message. By jailbreaking you can now set that game to the backround,
check your message, and go back to the middle of your game.
