Basic Exchange settings?

Hi, new iphone 3g synced with gmail ok but using Exchange 2003 at work and I can't get any sort of communication going. I get "connection to the server failed" whatever I do!
I can't seem to find a simple step by step idiots' guide to setting it up. Can anyone help?

thanks LS, I'd tried all of that but something just isn't working at all. I've now contacted my IT guy to see if there's some setting on the server that he hasn't done yet.
Frustrating though when you read of people who just type in the details and off they go! Tried with Mobileme too but that can't connect either..

The error 'connection to server failed' has many causes. If the IT guy can't identify the problem, then point him towards the ActiveSync Tester tool (on downloads.com) or the Microsoft Exchange connectivity test site which will identify where the problem lies.
