Having problems downloading Iphone update 2.2.1

I have tried unsuccessfully for the past month to download and install the most recent update for my Iphone - 2.2.1. From within Itunes I request the download and install, and I can see that the update is downloading but when it gets to the end I always get this error;

"There was a problem downloading the iPhone software for iPhone "KeithsIphone". The network connection timed out."

I get this everytime I try to download this update??? Does anyone have a solution to this problem?? Thanks for any input.

I'm pretty new at this iPhone stuff, but I would try restarting the iP and then doing it.
