removal of contacts that aren't contacts?

I type in an e-mail address that is not in a "contacts" list and the I-Phone obviously remembers it. Because every time that I address a new e-mail and start the entering, every address that I have ever sent to with that first letter appears. I need to edit and/or remove some of those addresses and I cannot find anywhere to do so...HELP? I just tried using a SIM card editor which was useless.
