Odd sound coming from phone

My iPhone 3g has in just the last 3 days started making the sound that it makes when you plug it in to charge it at random times. Sometimes I am on a call, sometimes it is sitting on the table next to me doing nothing. Never when it is plugged it. I have no idea why it is doing this. Anyone else have this happen? Is it a symptom of something else?

Either two things: hardware or software.

Try restoring the phone and if it continues after that you need to exchange the phone for a new one.
