Apple number 3 in global smart mobile device market
Interestingly, the Apple number (2,320,840) appears not to include the iPod Touch as it's almost identical to Apple's own number for iPhone sales for the quarter ended December 29, 2007 (2,315,000).
The Microsoft number presumably includes WM PDAs.

A bit of WM spin then -
WM grew grew 8.9 million shipments in 2006 to 15 million shipments in 2007. Market share is down, but growth is more or less matching the market, even while WM pda's are dropping of dramatically (only 3 million shipped in 2007) HTC has recently announced they shipped 9.7 million devices in 2007, which once again underlines how the market is spreading to other WM ODM's, which can only be good news.
The iPhone is still pretty new in the market, and we really do not know how much they stuffed the channel this Christmas, considering the discrepancy between the sales data and the shipped data. The recent arrival of the 16 GB model with allow this stuffing to continue, but looking at the stock price, the shine has been taken a bit of the Apple.

Canalys estimates that Apple took 28% share of the fast growing US converged device market in Q4 2007, behind RIMís 41%, but a long way ahead of third placed Palm on 9%. This was also enough to put Apple ahead of all Windows Mobile device vendors combined, whose share was 21% in the quarter according to Canalys figures.

Interesting that they could grab so much, so fast, especially considering only 1 (one) model (8gb), on 1 (one) tech (GSM), on primarily 1 (one) carrier (UK, DE, FR being smaller and later additions) has been consistently on sale for most of its release while Nokia, RIM, WinMo, etc. all have multiple devices, on both GSM and CDMA, on multiple carriers across the globe (often on more than one carrier/tech in the same territory).
(Interesting to be read as amazing).
