first off hello!, this is my first post at imore forums!

i am an avid tech junkie and have used every phone under the sun... i am currently on a htc trophy because i really like winodws metro UI, and it works weel with my windows pc and xbox 360 ( and it is the only windows phone verizon offers). however i am starting to have to many little problems, some of which are hardware related. such as poor battery life, bad camera photos, and now radio issues... dropping calls and texts not going through on the first try. so i am strongly considering coming back to an iphone 4. here is my dilemma: iphone 5 is coming out soon and i know that with ios 6 the iphone 4 is losing some of the best upgrades, such as facetime over 3g and turn by turn nav. everything else i dont really care about. so i am wondering if at this point it is worth purchasing an iphone 4 or should i shell out the extra 100 bucks and get a 4s. i am forced to buy off contract so i am searching on ebay, but they hold their value so well, i am looking at spending 300 for an iphone 4, and i need 2 of them, one for me and one for my wife, and 400 for an iphone 4s. i am really thinking i should just get the 4 because i plan on upgrading to the 5 or 5s next year for my upgrade. what do you guys think?

Welcome If your buying off contract I would go for the 4 then get the 5 with a upgrade .. But it depends when your upgrade is next year .. The diff from 4 to 4s

Siri
Better camera
Faster processor

That's it untill iOS 6 .. Prob October sometime ..

if you can hold out for the 5 I would but if you must get something now go for the 4 it cost less and will hold you over untill your upgrade

The 4 will probably be jailbroken pretty quickly after iOS 6 drops. As soon as that happens, I'd be willing to wager that the two examples that you gave will be available on the 4.

Heck, the Facetime over 3G has been available to jailbroken phones for a very long time now. The turn-by-turn could be as easy as changing "false" to "true" in some .inf file, which might be able to be done without even jailbreaking.

And don't forget that there are dozens of 3rd party apps that provide turn by turn navigation. (I can't imagine leaving TomTom for whatever Apple provides.)

Jailbreaking is not very hard at all. Plus there is a very helpful jailbreak community on these forums that can help you out with any problems or questions you might have!

As a 4S user that decided to jailbreak his device, +1 along with all other mention of jailbreaking if you decide to get a 4. Not that it wasn't before, but jailbreaking seems to be extremely stable these days and, with regards to Facetime over 3G, will give you what you're looking for despite the 4 being left out of certain iOS 6 features (3G Unrestrictor tricks apps into thinking you're on wi-fi, and is not limited to Facetime - think circumventing Apple rules for downloading apps over a certain size over 3G, and accessing HD quality vids over the YouTube app for starters).

Actually though, I'd recommend getting a 4S over a 4, since you'll get all the bells and whistles of iOS 6 once it's released, and the phone will definitely retain its value in case you want to get rid of it and go for the 5 sooner than later. (I'd still recommend jailbreaking after that even though it. I absolutely never experience any slow-downs with mine, and I would imagine that has to do with the faster aspects of the 4S vs. the 4. And you have an entirely new world of shortcuts and handy tweaks at your fingertips.)

Just my $0.02 - good luck with whatever you decide!

Jailbreaking is very easy. I did not know anything about it as well but as stated, there are forums here that will help you through the process. It is a whole new world once jailbroken.
