Default I will when I hear about a friend's getting stolen

I don't right now. I have never lost a phone or gotten it stolen. With an iPhone, I'm reaching for it like every 3 minutes anyway.

But when I hear that my friend's had his stolen (hopefully it's not the other way around with one my friends), I might consider password protecting it.

It's an inconvenience that isn't necessary.

i'm a big fan of locking, since I like making notes to myself on the thing. that, and i prefer to have a password on my email one way or another.

I do, after 5 minutes. I figure that is long enough. If I am doing something and just put the phone down quickly, it won't lock. But if I have set it down for an extended period of time, it will.

I don't. Too many passwords to memorize. What if you forget the password, do you have to restore the phone and lose all the contacts/data you entered?

Definitely passcode-lock. I did this with my old Treo as well. Even though my iPhone never leaves my side, you can never be too sure about thieves and hackers...maybe in 2.2, there'll be an auto self-destruct?
