Water damage, recovery mode, help?

After accidently dropping my iPhone 3GS down the toilet I drained it, dried it, left it in some rice. But now it's gone into recovery mode (understandable as it lay in water for 3-5 seconds). I do what iTunes prompts and recover my iPhone to it's factory setting but yet it still returns to recovery mode... a few a attempts with day between them and it still enters recovery mode! Any help? would appreciate it sincerely as I am embaressingly stuck with a Sony Ericcson! *shivers*

Did restoring from iTunes go through all the way?
Did you try restoring from DFU mode?

If all else failed open the phone up, not scary as it sounds, there is many videos on YouTube that show you how to replace the battery that might help
Get a new toothbrush and clean the internals with %99 alcohol, let it dry then try restoring again
