Welcome to iMore! I had that issue for a while. I just went to my Gmail account online in Safari on my phone and deleted those there. They stayed deleted. It was an issue for months. Then I noticed one say it had stopped. No clue why.
You might try going to Settings >Mail, Contacts and Calendar > email account > delete the account. Then add it back in with your credentials.
