i have deleted all junk mail from my ipad but its still showing 16 unread how do i get rid of this?

I have deleted all from my junk mail but it is going up all the time, this is also on my iphone 5, how do i get rid of this?

sometimes I just go into the "all mail" tab and hit edit>mark all>mark as read. mine occasionally does this as well.

I had this before where junk mail would not stay deleted. I had to go to my email account online in Safari on my phone and delete those there. That worked.
