I have a keyboard for my iPad, how do I make the iPad use the keyboard and not the one on the iPad?

I have a keyboard for my Ipad,

but the letters appear on the ipad how do I get it to use the keyboard instead

Make sure that the keyboard is turned on.
Make sure that the keyboard and the iPad are connected (typically via Bluetooth).
Make sure that the keyboard is active (and not in an idle state).

Like SwitchBeach said, make sure they are connected via bluetooth.

You have to pair them manually from the settings at first.
