Why can't I open my iPad messages when I can see 6have been rec'd

Last night my daughter sent me 5 iPad messages that had wedding photos attached to each message. As my iPad was in a different room I didn't get to open them indivually. When I did click on the green message icon it just went to a blank screen. Even all my previous messages didn't show up. I have powered off the iPad and also done a system update that was waiting to be done.

It's possible you've signed out of iCloud. Tap the settings icon and look for iCloud to see if you're signed in. Also check the messages icon in settings and ensure that iMessage is enabled. If it is, try toggling it off and on again.
