Why won't my apple pencil write on my iPad Pro

I paired the pencil and tried to write notes on the not pad and on the calendar and it won't write

If you swipe down from top of the iPad Pro screen to open notifications, does it show the Pencil and battery life - just to verify connection?

AFAIK you can not "write" in the calendar app.

As for NOTES - When you are creating or editing a note, you tap the squiggly line in the bottom right corner to enable to feature.
