Wireless N
I have a iPad mini wifi. I recently got Verizon DSL. Prior to that I had Comcast cable, I was using a lynksys wireless N router.
When they installed the DSL router they told me it had built in wireless capabilities and that it would be faster than my old router, I don't know if this correct.
I have 15 Mbps down and 2 up but I'm not getting that on my mini.
I just set the DSL router to 802.11 N only.
It's a actiontec DSL modem.
Any thoughts. - 11-12-2012, 08:56 PM #2

I run multiple tests and I range between 4 and 9 down and about 1 up
Didn't realize cable was faster, we dropped cable tv for direct tv and the DSL came with the package.
They said 10 to 15 down but can't see to get that. - 11-12-2012, 09:59 PM #5
Re: Wireless N
I had Verizon dsl for all of 5 day's and. It was the worst experience ever. All I have ever heard of is bad things about there dsl also. My comcast service is way ahead of dsl and it's about 15 times faster then dsl. My speed down is 36, up is 5 to 8. And the Verizon dsl modem they give you is horrible also. I can't stress enough that dsl is nothing but slowness and problems. Good luck though with whatever you decide.

Could it have been your distance from the switch.
Can anyone recommend a better modem that works with Verizon DSL ? - 11-13-2012, 06:58 AM

I get 14 down on my i5 and 2 down on my mini.
Any reason ?
I have the mini set to 8.8.8.8 right now and not any better - 11-13-2012, 07:43 AM #9
Re: Wireless N
Like the commercial says - don't give in to bundling. I have DirecTV for television, and Comcast for Internet. I don't use the modem that Comcast provides either.

The first thing to check is the speed on wired Ethernet from a PC or Mac.
If that gives you what you expect and the iPad doesn't then we can try to help with the wireless side of things. - 11-13-2012, 01:38 PM #11
Re: Wireless N
You could also hook up the Linksys router and connect to that with the Mini and see what kind of speeds you're getting. It would just give you more details about which one of the devices might be holding you back.
can't upgrade via iTunes check this thread http://forum.tipb.com/jailbreak-unlo...ml#post1717460

I hooked up my wife's MacBook to the modem.
I use speed test .net.
1st test. 3 down 1 up
2nd test. 10 down 1 up
3rd test 8 down 1 up
I was told by Verizon that t would have 10 down 2 up.
I tested my mini right after.
1st test 2 down .6 up
2nd test .6 down . 6 up
3rd test 2.3 down .6 up
Does anyone have any insight on this
Thanks - 11-13-2012, 08:00 PM #14

Now try it with the MacBook on wifi.
Also are you connecting to the 2.4 or 5 GHz network (if your wireless n has both)? Make sure you are testing the iPad and MacBook on the same frequency. - 11-13-2012, 08:49 PM

Mac wifi
1st test 8.6 down 1.4 up
2nd test 11.8 down 1 up
3rd test 11.7 down 1 up
Mini
1st test 9.7 down .8 up
2nd test 1.1 down .6 up
3rd test 11.8 down .6 up
How can the test vary so much between tests.
Is there network traffic on DSL ?
Can't understand why it varies so much.
If my kids are watching Netflix will that affect my test ? - 11-13-2012, 09:01 PM #16

My uverse fluctuates the same way too seems your getting similar results directly connected as you do wifi
Sometimes at night 5 to 8 my speed drops a little I had a tech put changed my line and circuit and modem still its not consistent ..
What I learned is as long as what you are trying to do works like for me stream Netflix and iTunes movies with almost instant play then I'm ok
I did think about going back to cable though - 11-13-2012, 09:15 PM

Netflix will definitely chew up
your bandwidth. With the speeds you listed, it looks like you are getting reasonably close to the 10 down / 2 up you were quoted. - 11-13-2012, 10:15 PM #21
Re: Wireless N
Bottom line, dsl will be slower than what they tell you. Reason? Distance. The farther away you are from the central office, the lower it gets.
blah blah blah witty signature blah blah blah - 11-13-2012, 10:30 PM #22
Re: Wireless N
Yea I have have no clue on distance but I did get advertised speeds. But I am paying the same price with comcast. No sure y the mini is so much slower. Yea I don't have Netflix. Crap quality and AFAIK their content has no surround sound.

It seems sporadic on the mini.
Can I increase speed with a better modem, if so which one.
A while ago there was thread that explained how to increase wifi performance. I made the changes on my old device and it seemed to work better.
I do not recall the changes I made. I tried to find the thread but couldn't
Does anyone recall. - 11-13-2012, 10:50 PM #24
