Why in messages when I tap to the name comes up red

It means that you are unable to send a SMS message to the recipient due to your device not being connected to a wireless service provider's network. If your iPad Air has cellular data capabilities AND you have cellular data service, enabling it will rectify the problem.

Do you have an iPhone and is the ipad wifi only? If so go to settings messages text message forwarding (on the iPhone) and select the name of your iPad. And then look for the code that pops up on your ipad. Type it in to your iPhone and you should be good to go. If no code comes turn off imessage on your iPhone and turn it back on.
