Ipad transfer question

Bought my dad a new ipad air and now I want to transfer from his old ipad2 to the new. He doesn't have a computer so I'm concerned about losing the data on the transfer. Can I backup to my laptop and then delete I do not want it to link to my data after the transfer is complete, or i it prudent for me to buy him a mini pc to do the transfer and maintain his backups. I hope this made sense.
