Sync Google Contacts with iPad's?

I tried to follow the tutorial in the iMore tips, but I kept hitting snags.

When exporting my Gmail contacts, nothing seemed to happen when I clicked Export after selecting M Contacts and VCF export.

I tried the Exchange method, but I couldn't get a password to work.

Make sure your gmail information is listed in the manner below via the Microsoft Exchange setup on your iPad:

Email: JohnDoe@gmail.com
Server: m.google.com
Username: JohnDoe
Password: yourpassword
Use SSL: ON

If your password is indeed correct, you should easily connect to gmail. Afterwards choose to have your mail, contacts and calendars displayed and synced by turning each of them ON.

Thanks! This morning I found I could set everything up from my Linux desktop. Both my Gmail contacts and Google calendars are synced.
