Import MKV files to iOS 9 device via camera connection kit

I have security cameras that save mkv flies to a SD card. I would like to be able to import them to my iOS device via the camera connection kit (more convenient than carrying my laptop around). The Photos.app obviously doesn't import mkv files. Is there a 3rd party app that can pull them off a SD card?

Does VLC work?

VLC does not see the card via the card reader.

That's a bummer. I use a pocket wifi media streamer that has an SD card slot.

Well, any NAS drive will do. VLC does work with network drives. I bought a Gigastone media streamer/smart battery. It has an SD card slot and a USB port and battery. It is basically a pocket Wifi NAS drive. VLC recognizes it as a network drive. VLC has support for MKV file playback.
