A few years ago I came across an article about creating a QR code to connect wireless devices to WiFi, which at that time worked with Android seamlessly but involved a copy/paste to work with iOS device. Is this still the case? I'm a network administrator with a "public" area that we have a password protected WiFi network (since we used to have leechers) and if this has finally evolved to work with both mobile OSes it might be benefitial. Thanks

It depends on the app. With iOS, apps are sandboxed. In iOS, the camera isn't integrated into the operating system with a standard user interface API across apps like in Android OS. And iOS doesn't have built in barcode/QR code decoding.

Think of this. Anyone can create a QR code. There is no security that someone's QR code couldn't be a scam Wi-Fi network. The phone user would need to trust the QR Code. With iOS, you still can trust the QR code for Wi-Fi connections, though you will most likely have to manually enter the password.
