Why did iPad Air2 turn off wifi itself?

My hardware is an iPad Air 2 that has been stable until now. Operating iOS 9, I lost the wifi connection. Battery was >80% at the time. When I opened settings to reconnect, I found that wifi was actually "off". Turned back on and reconnected with no issue. Later in the day, some time after updating to 9.0.1, another identical occurrence with a battery that was still over 60%.Has anyone else expended this? I've certainly seen wifi drop, but never found that the iPad had turned off wifi.

No, I'm not having that issue on an iPad Air or iPad mini.
