Doh! Cat unplugged iPad during iOS 8 update

My cat usually has bad timing, but not this bad. Anyway, now when I try to start up the ipad, the screen shows an image of the cable pointing to the iTunes logo. Is there a way to rescue any non-native app data on the system? I believe I backed up the data on iTunes before starting the update, but not sure. And the reason I'm not sure is the bloody latest version of iTunes keeps crashing for no reason (I'm on Windows 8).

I think it has to be done via iTunes- Maybe try uninstalling iTunes and try again
