Yes that was my understanding as well. I was just curious as to how the poster was able to do it without Bluetooth on.

I'm sorry. I was misinformed. I just now hit the airdrop icon and it automatically turns Bluetooth on. I didn't realize it before. I thought because both phones were on the same wifi, that it just connected over that.

Also guys if you have it set to contacts only you have to make sure you both have each other's Apple ID emails in the contact page.

I went into control centre and turned on AirDrop and both WiFi & Bluetooth icons turned on at the same time. Maybe the OP didn't realise that Bluetooth was on because they were focused on what they were doing? And the distance is 30feet because. that is the current Bluetooth distance.
