Data in iCloud contains several information. Like your contact list, messages, which apps you have installed and so on.. You can backup your phone with iTunes though. That will save all the data on your phone. That way you will have a copy of your phone on your computer or Mac.

iCloud itself is already copied in to the cloud, so you don't have to do anything to copy it yourself.
When you have to restore your iDevice, you can choose either to restore from iCloud as well as iTunes
