VPN turns off

I am using Hotspot Shield, which is a VPN app, and as soon as the screen goes dark the VPN turns off. How do I fix this?

Have you talked to the app developer? If it's a bug, he/she/they are the only one(s) who can fix it. Otherwise, you can try resetting your network settings, which includes your VPN info. You will have to re-enter everything again.

They told me to set the phone to never sleep and turn off auto lock. That didn't work either.
