Can't Update. Error Messages

I've downloaded the update for my 4S and have tried many times to update - wirelessly - with iTunes. I keep getting error messages telling me that the update has failed - for various reasons.

Has anyone else faced this situation?

Haven't tried. I have it set up to do so wirelessly. Should that cause a problem?

I have it set so that when I open iTunes it automatically backs up, and in this case updates. I am not pressing the sync button.

Is that what you mean?

Software update only works if you use the built in update feature on your iPhone or have it physically plugged into your machine if you go the iTunes route.

This is correct and it's located at settings > general > software update
