The only way to go back to LTE is to go to:

Settings > Cellular Data Options > Enable LTE > Off

and then select Voice & Data or Data Only:

I clan only assume the "bug" has been fixed because I just tried it and as soon as I selected "Dismiss", the coverage thingy immediately changed back to LTE. I'm running iOS 10.1 dev beta 1, by the way.

iOS 10.0.1 non-beta (public release) here with AT&T Carrier version 25.0.

I tried it multiple times and the same thing happened every single time.

For example, I launched the Phone app, I inputted *3282# Send (green phone icon) and then LTE stops working and goes to 4G.

It’s not the end of the world, but I do hope they fix it on 10.0.2.

Update: It seems to have fixed itself!! Bizarre!

Update 2: Please see my clarification on post #6 (below) of this thread.

I'm glad the problem fixed itself, and thanks for the update.

Perhaps I should clarify. When I said earlier that the issue has fixed itself, what I actually meant was that the 4G goes back to LTE after about 20 - 60 seconds.

But yes, sending any of those AT&T Services codes I mentioned in my OP will make the phone lose LTE and fallback to 4G.

Try it again, and then wait about a minute. It should return to LTE on its own. YMMV.

Have you asked AT&T about this?

Mine does the same - and automatically goes back in about a minute. I wonder if it has to use 4G for some aspect of the completion of the service request? It's like it drops to 4G to process, then goes back to LTE in a similar timeframe to the way it will pop back to LTE if you are in a bad cell area and it drops to 4G then it finds the LTE network again.

I just noticed with 10.0.2, mine drops to 4G while processing, but immediately goes back to LTE.

Edit: I am on AT&T. I have pretty good LTE and 4G signal. I have an iPhone 6S. I live in a pretty good sized metro area.

Not yet. I’ll log onto their site and request an online chat with a person, and report back here once that is complete (probably tomorrow). Hopefully I get lucky and get a fairly knowledgeable rep, and not just one who automatically points the finger at Apple.

For those of you who have noticed the drop to 4G and subsequent return to LTE when using these codes: Are any of you using a carrier other than AT&T?

Chatted with AT&T online. Here’s the transcript. Colors added for clarity.

AT&T : Hello! Thanks for choosing AT&T Chat.
Corie : Hi my names is Corie, thank your for your patience i will be assisting you today!
Rafael : Hello there Corie, thank you for replying so quickly. I was wondering about something; it's not a malfunction, just an odd behavior of the network connection.
Rafael : You're familiar with the * codes one uses from the Phone app on an iPhone, such as *3282# to check data usage or *646# to check minute usage?

Corie : Yes i am familiar with those
Rafael : Great! Well, when I'm on LTE and I send any of those codes, the connection falls back to 4G, stays that way until AT&T texts me the relevant information, then stays that way for about another 20 - 60 seconds, then finally returns to LTE. Do you have any idea why this happpens?
Corie : That is very weird! Bear with me for a few minuets while i look in to this for you.

    [sound of a minuet playing]

    Rafael : Excellent, thank you.
    Corie : Your welcome
Corie : I ran through all my systems and im not seeing any thing that would cause that, if this becomes a serious issue we can create a case for our network engineers to look in to and resolve the issue.
Rafael : It's not a serious issue, as it goes back to normal within 60 seconds, I was just curious. I don't think it's necessary to open a case.
Corie : It is very weird that is definitely a new one for me. If at any time it does become an issue we would be more than happy to involve them to resolve the issue.
Rafael : Thank you kindly; you've been most helpful.
Corie : Your very welcome. I hope you have a great night!

This is pretty much an US-only issue. In Europe 4G actually is faster than LTE. In USA carriers use 4G for "3,5G" connections. Weird.
My iPhone 6S with Vodafone shows 4G and I'm under an LTE A connection.

Why didn't you ask for a tech specialist? Those front line reps don't know much and get their info from a manual. Someone there must know something. You did title this thread "Major iOS 10 bug". LOL

I think he could tell by the tone of voice Corie said, "Your Welcome!" and not, "You're welcome!". LOL
