IOS contact photo in iMessenger

I deactivated the feature (it was on, now it's OFF) yet I still have everyone's initial in a circle in IMessages. Not a big deal obviously, just annoying since I have no actual pictures for any of my contacts

settings ------ messages --------- shut off SHOW CONTACT PHOTOS

It will show the initial. It's not a bug. Here's what you can do. Make a solid white photo. Use it as the profile photo in contacts. Toggle show contact photo back on in Settings. Then all you will see is white.
Use this as the contact photo you don't want to see.
