I dispute this. I work in IT Support, and deal with stressed users all the time. It is all about the bloody delivery!

    In other news...

Yep, connect to iTunes for me, too. So, no phone till later tonight. Priceless.
Confirmed with Apple support, too. Reload the OS via iTunes, and then preform your restore via iTunes or iCloud.

The device is not a brick. In technical terms the title of the thread is misleading to general users. If this were the true case the device is never able to be used again, ever....

But having a bad iOS install does not meet the above criteria. Even if said user does not have iTunes available right now, it only means it's not usable at the present time, but still can be recovered at a later time.

It's a iOS install issue that Apple has already addressed publicly stating to use iTunes if this happens to the user..

People were jumping the gun on calling "Bricked" which is not true. There has been true cases where the device in turn was a true brick with a result of something on Apples end which required users to call Apple or go into the store to have the issue resolved.

Apple screwed up. I can't apologize for them..

Borrowed a friends computer and I am getting nowhere. iTunes says I have to update and then it seems to download before erroring out and saying I have to restore. That to does the same thing. Constant loop.

Any suggestions. Both my iPad and iPhone are out now. My wife started the iPad update before I could warn her.

Mine has taken 3 hours with iTunes, finally restoring. I backed up this morning in iTunes.
I went through the error update many times. Patience. I restarted my computer and finally. iTunes is updated.

Its not a brick just because you do not know how to fix it.
If you can still access Recovery mode or DFU mode and reload the OS then its not a brick.

If you do not have access to Itunes then go to an apple store and they can reload the OS for you.

That's what I get for being anxious and wanting the shiniest, newest thing ASAP. I just hope the rest of my updates tonight (Watch, ATV, Mac and iPad Pro) go smoother.

I see my problem. I did an OTA phone upgrade but was plugged into computer. Not having the new iTunes 12.5.1 did the grief.

Did you do it OTA or were you connected to iTunes?

Same here. Apple had already fixed the problem by the time we updated. Oversleeping may have worked in my favor.

I always do the same have never been burned. If I had started at 1000 PT it might have been. It's too bad anybody got burned, but sometimes bad things happen. It could be my turn on the next update.

I don't think it does. Both posts clarify the terminology, in a straightforward manner. I don't see any aggression. Neither makes light of the update going awry. Maybe I missed such a post.

Anybody can ascribe any definition to any word- this is the Internet after all. But it's misleading and potentially confusing. If it makes them feel better, it's cheap therapy. It doesn't make them right.

I was able to get mine back up and running, but I did it on device. My macbook is acting wonky now for some reason and all the apple apps are crashing, thats the next fix. As to the whole brick not brick thing, my only point I suppose is that most folks on this thread have a general idea of what was meant by the original poster, especially after posting it in the IOS10 forum. Going off on a tangent about whether the correct term is bricked, malfunctioning, stuck in a boot loop, etc just detracts from what I believe the original poster was just trying to say. His (as was mine) phone was unusable after the update. Yes plug it into iTunes yada yada yada, but the fact of the matter is for most folks, this may as well be a piece of brick at that point due to not being able to, or having access to a computer at the time with iTunes. Just my .02, I'm good now with the update, good luck to all you who are still having issues. I remember why I stay away from forums for the most part now. LOL

At home now and connected to iTunes. Thus far, three restores have failed. After the OS extracts via iTunes, it suddenly can't find the iPhone. Weird. Trying again, but will keep pressing the volume button to keep the screen active during the extraction. Once it has finished, it should hopefully start the OS install.

Did three things (6S+, SE and iPad Pro) using OTA at 1:10 Eastern today with no issues on any.

Glad it worked for you. I've tried at least 4 times now (once OTA, the rest through iTunes) and it still won't work.
