I wrote this in the linked iMore article. I was pretty jazzed having ordered the CalDigit hub for the then preorder price of $199. That was 2 weeks ago. Since then, anticipated ship date has slipped to "Late Q1 2017" and the preorder price has jumped an astonishing 50% from $199 to $299.

I've been looking for a Thunderbolt 3 hub for my late-2016 MBP 13 TB and have identified the following candidates as of the end of January 2017. The critical features I need are DisplayPort, gigabit ethernet, laptop charging, 2xUSB 3, 2xTB3. Nice to have are headphone output, USB 3.1, SD card reader.

    1. Elgato TB3 Dock - has all the critical features and additionally a headphone out jack. Expensive at an anticipated $300. Flat format case.

    2. Belkin TB3 Express Dock - has all of the critical features and additionally a headphone out jack. Insanely expensive at an anticipated $430. Flat format case.

    3. OWC TB3 Dock - has all of the critical features and additionally a headphone out jack and SD card reader as well as USB 3.1 gen 1. It also has superfluous features: S/PDIF and Firewire 800 jacks. It is priced at $279 preorder or $299 normally. Flat format case.

    4. CalDigit TB3 Thunderbolt Station 3 - has all of the critical features and additionally audio in/out, USB 3.1 gen (?), and superfluous feature: 2xeSATA ports. It is priced at $200 preorder or $250 normally. Vertical format case.

The CalDigit TS3 is likely the unit I'll go with. It has the best balance of critical and nice to have features with the fewest superfluous (I don't need or use them) features. The price is among the most reasonable. Also, the unique vertical format case takes up less real estate on my already cluttered desktop so that's an extra plus.

I think Satechi USB hub seems quite handy since it gets you to use USB and SD cards along. Do others have the same option?
