Editor's desk: Massive celebrity nude photo theft and how you can protect yourself

Last night a massive amount of nude celebrity photos were posted onto the internet. To be clear, these weren't "leaks". These were crimes. They were thefts and illegal distributions and worse ? violations of privacy and dignity. Dispassionately, it should absolutely be treated like credit card or banking or any other information being stolen. Passionately, we only need to imagine they were photos of us or our loved ones to put it in the proper human context. So, what happened, who can we trust, and how can we protect ourselves?

I do share kids photos via Facebook to 'family only'.
But i have started to do a photo cull every few months from facebook incase my settings get weird.
Or their policy changes.

Oddly my wife often uses a photo with our son in it for her Facebook profile image innocently.
They last week I uploaded a photo of our son and Facebook suggested it was my wife!
So Facebook automatically has connected her profile image to any faces that look the same..... not nice.
