Do you need airdrop on to send videos using imessage

This is my first iphone, the 6s. Do you need airdrop on to send a video using the imessage? My wife has a 6 and could not forward me a video, after looking at her phone I saw she had the airdrop on, I changed mine and got the video. Is the the only way to send and receive a video?

Airdrop and iMessage are two completely separate (and different) things.

Is is, however, possible that the video was too large in size to send via iMessage. But can definitely be sent via AirDrop if you are within proximity of each other.

AirDrop uses WiFi and Bluetooth. iMessage does not use Bluetooth.
