Why isn't my iMessage showing on my iPhone but does on other devices?

imessage not showing on iphone but does on other devices

I have iMessage set up on my iphone ipad and Mac. I normally delete my text history so the list doesn't get too long. There is one person I imessage with where the message shows up on my ipad and Mac but not my phone. If I reply to it from my phone by starting a new message to them future replies show on my phone but if I delete that message history from the list of messages it doesn't show up again.

This only happens with one person and I can't figure out why.
