Multiple Conversations Showing Up

Started noticing this last night after texting back and forth with my wife. At one point in time she replied back to a message that I sent and her message showed up in a new conversation. I can still access the original conversation and new conversation but when she replies it goes to either one.

I deleted the older of the two and continued throughout the rest of the night only to have it happen again.

Not a big deal but wondering if anyone else is having the same issue currently.

Besides your phone number, do you happen to use an email address as an iMessage address? It's possible she started a new conversation
on her end and selected that email address.

By chance does she use two different phones.

Highly unlikely as she couldn't activate a phone on her own not to be mean or anything. I considered in possibly happening if she signed out to a computer somehow
