iMessage on Macbook

I just started using iMessage on my mac. I have it set up with my apple ID (a gmail email), but other people type in my email on their messages app it says it's not verified. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Login to the Manage My Apple ID site -- https://appleid.apple.com -- andante sure the address is verified. Also, go to your iMessage settings and see what is checked via the Send & Receive at option or something to that extent. Make sure it is set to your preferred Apple ID.
