Can someone explain to me how iMessage works...
I'm a bit confused. Is it something like text plus? Right now I use that and hand out that number to when I am on the road. I know it has some direct connection or shared connection with iPhone devices but I don't use one anymore. Just my iPad. I would love to ditch text plus if this is looking to be similar. It's very buggy.
Is a number assigned to me?
Thanks for any help guys.

iMessage is a protocol which is integrated into the messages app. It automatically detects if both users are on an iOS 5 device and uses data rather than SMS to send messages, photos, audio, etc...
It does not assign you a new number. People will contact you via your same number and if they are on iOS 5 it will be free for both of you.
However, you CAN message people on iOS 5 through their Apple ID email address, rather than their phone number.
Does that answer your questions?

And if you don't want to hand out your personal email, you can always make an extra one on google and have them contact you in iMessage through that. In the settings, you can assign many emails to be used as your iMessage address. I have 3 right now.
