iMac USB CD Drive question

I have a USB CD drive that won't display on my right side bar when plugged in. My external hard drives do, but not the CD drive. Also when I insert a CD (like TurboTax) I have to unplug the drive from the USB port and re-plug it in to get it to show the drive in the side bar so I can work with it. I'm sure this is a setting, but which one ?? Please advise. Thank you in advance.

See if the manufacturer of the external drive has new Mac drivers available, or a firmware update.
