My iMac is running slow!

Hey,

After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac has been acting slow. We went to the Apple Store and they told us to increase RAM.

My iMac has 12GB RAM and 700GB free space.

Start up is slow (Login items are dialled) - Dock takes a few second to appear and it has stopped sliding up now.

Can anyone tell me the reason?
