Why do I get the message there is a problem connecting to iCloud on my Mac Book Pro

Logging on to my MacBook Pro I receive the message, "There is a problem connecting to iCloud". I can "Cancel" or click on "Later". Why is there a problem? And how can I resolve it?

Welcome to iMore

Are you connected via wired or wireless? We need a bit more info to rule out any connection issues.

Possible reasons include, but are not limited to the following:
1. No internet access
2. Improper iCloud credentials
3. Server problems on Apple's end
