Why do deleted contact information re-appear on my Mac?

Question about Contacts

I am using :

iMac (OSX 10.19)
iPad 2 (iOS 8.1.2)
iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1.1) - newly acquired

I am trying to get my Contacts to behave reasonably but things are being strange. The iCloud Contacts are ON for all devices.

I opened Contacts on my iMac and deleted several out-of-date cards. The cards disappear from the iMac list, the iPhone list, the iPad list and the iCloud.com list. I then quit Contacts on my Mac and when I relaunch it, all the deleted contacts reappear on my Mac but NOT in the iCloud.com list or on either of the the iOS devices.

Am I doing something wrong? Where did the deleted contacts go and why/how did they come back?

I don't know because I can't replicate the problem. Do you have more than one email service configured that also contain the deleted contacts?
