Apple ID ad iCloud email different

For some reason my Apple ID and my iCloud email are different. My iCloud email is also the username I use for Gmail. But I don't recall creating an iCloud email. I want my Apple ID and iCld to be the same. For example currently when I go to Settings>iCloud>Account my Apple ID is (this is not real) JohnSmith@aol.com but when I scroll down to Mail it reads JohnSmith1234@icloud.com, Again that username is the same as my Gmail but I never created one so I'm not sure why it is using that username. I want my @icloud to be the same as my Apple ID. Not sure if any of that made sense. Any help or insight would be great. If I didn't make any sense than feel free to let me know. That is the best I could explain.

Maybe it helps to understand the Apple ID which has nothing to do with your iCloud mail address.
