How's it Work??

Just downloaded OS 5 to my iPhone 4. All I'm using iCloud for is a backup for contacts, calendar and notes. Will it auto backup (if so how often) or do I have to click on "Backup Now" in settings. Will it sync my iPhone and laptop or only backup my iPhone? I presume it just overwrites the old backup?
