I'm planning to buy an iphone, and I was looking up some information on the internet about how the iphone works. But now I saw that you need MobileMe to check your e-mail on your iphone Isn't there any option to check your e-mail without MobileMe?

Yes you can set up pop and imap and exchange accounts on your iphone without mobileme. It's pretty simple to do also, if you have outlook and the mac equivalent iTunes will even set them up for you (you will just have to enter your password and maybe edit the smtp info).

You can have those features without mobileme, mobile me is simply an exchange that will keep all your contacts, mail, calendars and bookmarks syncd between multiple computers and your phone and does it wirelessly. But it is not necessary to have your contacts, calendar and mail on your iPhone.
