Gmail sync is doubling my messages

I have the latest software update installed on my iPhone 3G. I am also syncing everything that Google offers to be synced (Gmail, calendar, contacts). Gmail is the only email that I currently have access to on my iPhone. In the last day or two whenever I get a new email the total appears doubled on the iPhone home screen. Example:

I have 3 actual unread emails in my Gmail inbox. The "Mail" icon on my iPhone home screen has a little red circle with the number "6" in it. When I tap on the icon and go to my inbox it says at the top that I only have 3 unread messages. Even after returning to the home screen the situation persists (red circled "6").

Any suggestions on how to remedy this? It's not really a problem, just a little irritating.

Don't feel alone, my hotmail/live account is doing the same thing. I will have to delete the messages twice a day from my phone, only to see them once when I log into my email on the computer.
