Serial communications (usb)

Does anyone know how to perform serial communications on the iPad. I will have a USB to 9-pin serial adapter and I want to talk to another device. Specifically, is there a Framework or API availabile -- if so I have not been able to find it?

i think it's not possible with iOS 4.2...Apple doesn't allow it
