why doesn't my phone alert me when I receive a text?

I have the volume turned up and I never hear my text sound when I receive a text.

Welcome to iMore! Do you hear calls? Is it all texts or just from one contact?
More info would help.
Is the ring/silent switch on?
Try turning the volume up in 3 places.
1. Side of phone
2. Swipe up Control Center
3. Settings > Sounds
Check you have a an alert tone set.
Make sure Do Not Disturb is off in messages. Tap "details" in the upper right. Scroll down to Do Not Disturb and toggle off. Do for each contact you don't hear.
